How to Choose the Right Salon in Bangalore: A 7-Point Checklist

Bangalore has a salon on almost every street, from small neighbourhood barbers to large unisex studios. That choice is great, but it also makes it easy to end up somewhere that is not right for the service you need. Use this checklist before you book, whether it is a quick haircut or a three-hour colour appointment.

1. Look closely at hygiene

This matters more than the décor. Tools such as combs, scissors and razors should be cleaned between clients, towels should be fresh for each person, and anything that touches skin (razor blades, wax spatulas, extraction tools) should be single-use or properly sterilised. For waxing, the wax should never be double-dipped with a used spatula. If you are unsure, ask how they clean their tools; a good salon will be happy to explain.

2. Match the salon to the service

A salon that does great fades may not be the best place for balayage, and a strong colour team may not offer bridal makeup. Check which services the salon lists, and for anything technical (colour correction, keratin, smoothening, bridal looks) look for a specialist who does that work regularly. Photos of their own work on social media or in the salon's gallery tell you far more than a generic menu.

3. Read reviews for patterns, not stars

An average rating hides a lot. Read recent reviews and look for patterns: are people happy with a particular stylist, do several reviews mention long waits, or do colour clients keep coming back? A few mixed reviews are normal; repeated complaints about the same thing are a signal.

4. Understand the price before you sit down

Many salon services have a starting price ("from" or "onwards") because the final cost depends on hair length, thickness or the products used. That is fair, but ask for the likely final price before the service starts, especially for colour, treatments and anything sold by length. On Bookwie, services with variable pricing are clearly marked so you know what to expect.

5. Choose a location that fits your day

In Bangalore traffic, a salon 6 km away can easily mean an hour in transit. Pick somewhere near home or work so you are not rushing in late or cutting a treatment short. If you are in one of these neighbourhoods, start here:

6. Ask for a consultation for chemical services

Before colour, bleaching, keratin or smoothening, a good stylist will ask about your hair history (previous colour, henna, treatments) and, for colour, recommend a patch test 48 hours before. If a salon skips this step for a chemical service, treat it as a warning sign. It protects your hair and your scalp.

7. Book ahead for weekends and festivals

Saturday afternoons, Sundays and the weeks around Diwali, Ugadi and the wedding season fill up quickly. Booking a slot in advance means no waiting, and you can pick the stylist or specialist you want.
